There are three types of weapons.
1 Bows and arrows. Bows may be swung like all weapons,
and also improve arrow fire considerably. Generally
a Bow needs to be about two plusses better than a
Flail or Sword before it is a viable alternative.
2 Flails. Flails are generally slightly worse weapons
then a Sword of equivalent enchantment.
3 Swords. Swords are the best weapons. Get one!

jewelry short of using a Scroll of Identify. Beauty's
function is not known.
Blurring
Blurring conveys +1 armor class, so it is identifiable
without using a scroll by watching your armor class as
you use and unuse various garments.

Cold Shielding
This greatly reduces the amount of damage you sustain
from cold attacks, such as those from Ice Barons. You
can identify it by checking how much damage you take
with and without the item in use when you see the
message "An icy wave washes over your body."
Curse (cursed)
There is no way to distinguish this from Enmity (cursed)
without using a Scroll of Identify. Its function is
presumably similar to that of a Scroll of Curse.
Enmity (cursed)
There is no way to distinguish this from Curse (cursed)
without using a Scroll of Identify. Its function is
presumably antithetical to Beauty.

Fog Seeing (cursed)
This is easily identifiable, since when you are wearing
it all monsters appear fogged -- even monsters that are
normally invisible, so it is not completely bad. If you
use a Scroll of Remove Curse on one of these pieces of
jewelry, and have not yet found See Invisible, it is
worth carrying the Fog Seeing around for those instances
when you have to spot invisible monsters.
Heat Shielding
This greatly reduces the amount of damage you sustain
from heat attacks, such as those from an Ancient Wurm.
You can identify it by checking how much damage you take
with and without the item in use when you see the
message "Hot flames wash over your body."
Invulnerability
Invulnerability conveys +3 armor class, so it is easily
identifiable without using a scroll. Your armor class
is guaranteed to go up when you put this on!

Magic Shattering
There is no way to conclusively identify this piece of
jewelry short of using a Scroll of Identify. It is
thought that this allows you to walk through wards and
not risk having an item destroyed. It is possible this
also reduces the damage taken from attacks by magic-
wielding monsters such as enchantresses and Wizards.
Mind Cloaking
It is not that difficult to identify this item without
using a scroll. It prevents monsters that teleport from
teleporting up to you. So enchantresses will never gate
in at inopportune moments, and you will never begin a
level surrounded by teleporting monsters.
Power
There is no way to conclusively identify this piece of
jewelry short of using a Scroll of Identify. It allows
you to fight better in some unknown way.

This is easily identifiable, since when you are wearing
it you heal much faster. See the healing chart for more
specific information.
See Invisible
This piece of jewelry is easily identifiable once you
reach levels that invisible monsters appear on, as it
allows you to see normally invisible monsters.
Sylvan Travel
This massively studly item is simply identified the
first time you run across a pit, chute, trap door, or a
section of sticky ground, as it allows you to walk right
over them without being affected!

There is no way to conclusively identify this piece of
jewelry short of using a Scroll of Identify. It is
thought to give you an additional 2 or 3 strength.
Super-hearing
This piece of jewelry is identifiable by listening at
doors. If you listen about twenty times at the door to
an empty room and get few false noise messages, you have
Super-hearing. Your hearing is rarely incorrect when you
are wearing this piece of jewelry.
True Seeing
This is easily identified once you reach levels where
fogged monsters such as Genies and Ice Barons appear.
It allows you to see these normally fogged monsters in
their unfogged state. Note that Fog Lord is invisible
in his unfogged state!

This instantly kills an undead monster.

If the monster is not undead, it is suspected that it
is actually healed when zapped with this staff.
Staff of Shocking
- "Zaaaaap!"
This does a small amount of damage to you each time
you zap it at a monster. If you zap it off into
space, it does nothing, like all staves. If you kill
yourself with this staff, you show up in the records
as having died to shock.
Staff of Sleep
+ "The monster falls asleep."
This puts most living monsters to sleep for a number
of turns, making them easy to kill.

It does not work on undead, or some monsters that
first appear on very deep levels.

Staff of Slowness

This halves the monster's movement speed. If the
monster was already slow, the staff will have no
effect, although it will give the same message.
Staff of Warp Reality
This staff can duplicate the function of any other
staff in the game. Each time you use it, it behaves
in a completely random fashion, so it may help you
and it may hurt you. In general, since staves are
used for escape items, it is not reliable enough to
warrant carrying unless you have no other worthwhile
staves.

Note that counters for normal healing and altered forms
of healing apparently operate with different cycles.
vending machines
Sometimes when you descend to the next level you will
find a vending machine. The machine will have three of
four possible buttons. If you cannot afford any of the
buttons, you have no choice but to press shift-BACK.
Y The yellow button is free, and its behavior random.
It may do nothing, or drain 25% of your experience,
or allow you to uncurse an item, or function as one
of the other buttons.
R The red button costs 50 silver and allows you to
identify an item.
P The purple button costs 250 silver and will let you
recharge a staff.
B The blue button costs 1000 silver and will enchant
your weapon, shield, or armor one level.
The only use for silver is feeding it to these machines.
Gems are worth 50 silver pieces each to the machines.
fountains
Fountains are moderately uncommon terrain features.
They do one of three things the first time you step on
them; subsequently, they do nothing.
1 A flash of light blinds you momentarily.
The fountain has gated in a monster from a lower
level. The monster appears adjacent to you and gets
a free round.
2 You feel wonderful!
The fountain has added five to your permanent hit
point total.
3 You feel great!
The fountain has added two to your permanent strength
total. It has also healed all drained strength just
like a Potion of Restore Might.
pools
There are three types of pools.
1 Normally, pools do nothing and are merely cosmetic.
2 Sometimes, pools will gate in a monster from a lower
level. The monster appears next to you and gets a
free round. After the pool has gated in a certain
number of monsters, it will cease to gate.
The pool will gate in a monster whenever you enter
its room, and sometimes whenever you kill the monster
it has just gated. It will only do this last thing
if you enter the pool room such that the pool, the
monster it gates, and your character are all next to
each other, or so that the monster is gated in on top
of the pool.
These pools will also randomly teleport you the first
time you step on them. Stepping on them turns them
into normal pools immediately. The pools will teleport
you the first time you step on them even if you have
first exhausted their gating ability.
3 From level 50 on, you have a chance of finding the
winning pool. It behaves just like a gating pool,
but if you step into it, you win the game! It is
suspected that the winning pool never stops gating.
braziers & statues & wards
Braziers apparently have no function. They are not
very common. They make the sound: You hear bellowing.
Statues will sometimes turn into a monster when a
scroll is read in their room. It seems that statues
usually appear on levels in pairs.
Wards sometimes guard doors on the deeper levels. If
you walk through a ward, it will sometimes destroy a
random item on you character, which can be a very bad
thing.
